Iran FM: Ending occupation only way to achieve peace in Palestine

The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyed Abbas Araghchi demanded the termination of the occupation of Palestinian territories and restoration of Palestinian people's rights.

The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyed Abbas Araghchi demanded the termination of the occupation of Palestinian territories and restoration of Palestinian people's rights.

Araghchi made the remarks in a meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Committee on Palestine held on Thursday in New York, and called on the international community to support the legitimate struggle of the Palestinian nation.

Araghchi expressed gratitude to the Republic of Uganda for holding the meeting and its efforts to support the Palestinian cause.

He noted that the Zionist regime has escalated its violence and human rights violations against Palestinian civilians, including women and children, during the past year. The foreign minister said the number of those killed in Gaza is approaching the 42,000 mark, 70 percent of whom are innocent children and women.

Araghchi also highlighted the recent developments in Palestine as well as the resistance in Gaza and the West Bank, saying, "The developments prove that the efforts to destroy the Palestinian resistance and Hamas, as a liberation movement, have not been successful."

"The goal of stoking the conflicts and spreading the war in the region show a lack of commitment for peace and stability," he added.

He also touched on concerns over the situation in Lebanon, saying, "The strikes on Lebanon and breaching the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity are worrying and have put the lives of innocent civilians at risk."

Araghchi said using new methods in conflict zones that threaten the lives of thousands of people needs serious attention on the part of the international community.

The Iranian foreign minister demanded the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine show its support for the Palestinian nation's legitimate struggle by presenting meaningful proposals and measures.

He also demanded an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, lifting the siege on Gaza, the release of Palestinian inmates, and the necessity for a complete Israeli pullout from Gaza.

Meanwhile, Araghchi emphasized on imposing arms and commercial sanctions on Israel to completely stop its military actions and implement international commitments, calling for legal follow-up by the responsible officials in international institutions.

Concluding his remarks, the foreign minister stated that peace and security in the region will not be achieved unless the occupation ends and the indisputable Palestinians' rights, including the right to self-determination, are recognized.

"We suggest that all Palestinian people, whether in their own homeland or outside of Palestine, decide about their future through a referendum," Araghchi said, adding, "We are confident that through this mechanism we can achieve a lasting peace in which Muslims, Christians and Jews can live together in peace and harmony."
