Repeat Domestic Abuser Given Maximum Sentence of 11 Years and 8 Months in State Prison

(Woodland, CA) - December 16, 2024 - On December 12, 2024, the Honorable David Rosenberg sentenced 28-year-old Cairo Jones, of Davis, to 11 years and 8 months in state prison for inflicting corporal injury on a person with whom he had a dating relationship, while having a prior conviction for domestic violence, inflicting great bodily injury, and using a deadly weapon.

On November 1, 2024, Jones was convicted by a Yolo County jury of Making Threats to Commit a Crime Resulting in Death or Great Bodily Injury, Infliction of Corporal Injury on a Person with Whom Defendant had a Dating Relationship, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, False Imprisonment with Force and Violence, and Violation of a Court Order with Physical Injury. The jury also found true enhancements alleging that Jones suffered a previous conviction for domestic violence in 2021, that he inflicted great bodily injury on the victim, and that he personally used a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.

On October 7, 2023, Jones and his girlfriend of five years, were seated in their vehicle in the parking lot of the Dollar General in Woodland, CA. An argument ensued between the two after Jones accused her of infidelity. During the argument, Jones punched her in her face, causing a laceration that split her face and lip open. The two then travelled to Davis, where the abuse continued. Near Interstate 80, Jones grabbed the victim by her hair, dragged her out of the vehicle, and punched and kicked her as she lay on the asphalt. The abuse culminated on County Road 89. Jones told her that he would kill her and severely disfigure her. Jones then grabbed a metal baseball bat and beat the victim in the head and torso. In desperation, she tried to exit the still-moving vehicle, capturing the attention of a good Samaritan, who called 911. Yolo County Sheriff Deputies arrived on scene and arrested Jones.

The victim was transported to the hospital for her injuries, where she was diagnosed with a fractured nasal bone, multiple contusions, and multiple lacerations. Jones had previously been convicted of strangling this same victim in their Davis apartment in 2021.

DDA Gustavo Figueroa prosecuted the case during the jury trial and sentencing stages of the case. District Attorney Jeff Reisig commented, "We will continue to vigorously prosecute domestic violence offenders and protect the vulnerable victims of their abuse. Repeat domestic abusers pose an enormous threat to the lives of those they terrorize. This behavior will not be tolerated, and the abusers will be held accountable."
