Human rights are the foundation of peace and stability in the world. As such, respect for dignity and equality fosters harmony and resilience in societies.
EU Charge d'Affaires, Jose Becerra Marta, said this on 10 December 2024 in Manzini, Eswatini, during the commemoration of International Human Rights Day, a universally-recognised day meant to remind humanity about the importance of and the respect for human rights.
For this event held at Caritas and attended by a big crowd of human rights defenders, the European Union in Eswatini partnered with the Human Rights Commission, CANGO (Coordinating Assembly of Non-Governmental Organisations), Council of Swaziland Churches and other stakeholders.
In his speech, Becerra Marta added that human rights also drive social and economic development, hence it is important for people to respect and promote human rights. He said when human rights are sustained, individuals can reach their full potential, contributing to stronger economies, innovation and social progress.
"At the same time, human rights also ensure equality and inclusion. In fact, the centrality of human rights ensures that no one is left behind, promoting inclusive policies that address the needs of the most vulnerable," said Becerra Marta.
Earlier, the EU also joined the Human Rights Commission for a breakfast meeting in Mbabane where the commemoration of Human Rights Day began.
Also attending the breakfast meeting was the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Development, Prince Simelane, who delivered the keynote address.
