Professor Siva delivers Presidential Symposium Lecture

Peter Mac's radiation oncologist Professor Shankar Siva has become the first Australian to deliver a Presidential Symposium at the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) meeting.

The 2024 congress began in Washington DC over the weekend and is expected to attract 10,000 radiation oncologists, clinicians, researchers and other health care professionals from around the globe.

Professor Siva said it was a great honour and career highlight to be invited to give the lecture and share his knowledge on the role of stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR) for kidney cancer at the world's leading radiation oncology meeting.

"We have made great advances in the treatment of kidney cancer at Peter Mac, and we are globally recognised as pioneers in the use of SABR for this" Professor Siva said.

"Two years ago we published the ground breaking results of the International Radiosurgery Oncology Consortium of the Kidney (IROCK) study in the Lancet Oncology, and earlier this year we published the highly anticipated TROG 15.03 FASTRACK II international trial.

"The long-term data clearly shows a tremendous benefit for SABR treatment in people with inoperable or high-risk kidney cancer and this new pioneering treatment should now form part of the global treatment guidelines for primary renal cell carcinoma," he said.

The American Society for Radiation Oncology was founded in 1958 with the mission to advance the practice of radiation oncology globally.
