J. Huston Tavern in Arrow Rock State Historic Site to reopen…

JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JUNE 27, 2024 - After the historic J. Huston Tavern at Arrow Rock State Historic Site was unexpectedly in March, Missouri State Parks is pleased to announce plans to reopen the tavern later this year. The popular restaurant will reopen under a partnership with the nonprofit J. Huston Tavern Society.

The J. Huston Tavern Society formed in March after hearing the restaurant would be closing after nearly 200 years of service. The society's mission is "to maintain and preserve the tradition of the J. Huston Tavern as the oldest continuously operating restaurant west of the Mississippi." After no concessionaires applied to manage the tavern, Missouri State Parks entered into an agreement with the newly formed society to oversee the facility.

"We're excited for this new chapter," said Leslie Huston, president of the JHTS board. As her last name suggests, her husband's great-great-great grandfather was the tavern's original builder and owner. "The tavern has seen many iterations over the years and our board, like those who have come before us, has strong ties to our beloved Arrow Rock."

Doors to the tavern will open later this season, Huston said. Currently, JHTS is seeking a chef/general manager to help continue the tavern's tradition of excellence in food and hospitality. Also, the tavern will offer a provisions store that will be stocked with everything from culinary staples, such as flour, sugar and coffee to shampoo, sunscreen and other items that will save guests a trip outside of Arrow Rock.

"We are excited to have the tavern operating again this season," said David Kelly, director of Missouri State Parks. "This is the oldest restaurant in operation west of the Mississippi River and we want to continue that tradition. We are thankful for the dedication and determination of the society's members, so that visitors will be able to continue to enjoy a quality dining experience in this unique historical setting."

The JHTS plans to offer a buffet to accommodate the Lyceum Theater's schedule. Visitors who prefer to order off the menu will be able to do that as well. Fried chicken, a Tavern favorite, will be served as well as locally sourced seasonal fare that reflects the nation's western expansion.

The JHTS will also offer the second-floor ballroom as an event space for groups of up to 25 for corporate meetings, celebrations and other events.

Arrow Rock State Historic Site is located 15 miles east of Marshall on Missouri 41.
