APAI 2024 Annual Training Conference: A Celebration of Collaboration

The Association of Paroling Authorities International (APAI) hosted its 2024 Annual Training Conference in Bellevue, Washington, an event for professionals in the field of parole and community corrections. This year's conference was notable for its engaging sessions, distinguished speakers, and special recognitions, all set against the backdrop of the Pacific Northwest's vibrant atmosphere.

The conference began with a solemn and respectful ceremony as the Monroe Honor Guard opened the event, setting a tone of honor and commitment. Washington State Parole Board member Lori Ramsdell-Gilkey followed with a heartfelt land acknowledgment, paying tribute to the indigenous peoples of the region and recognizing the importance of the land on which the conference took place. This acknowledgment underscored the conference's commitment to inclusivity and respect for diverse cultures.

Nick Brown, former General Council for Governor Inslee, then delivered welcoming remarks, extending a warm greeting to the attendees and emphasizing the critical role of parole authorities in the justice system. His speech highlighted the conference's theme of collaboration and innovation in parole and community corrections.

The first general session was led by Chris Poulos, Executive Director at Center for Justice and Human Dignity, whose insights set the stage for a series of informative and thought-provoking discussions. Poulos's session focused on the evolving landscape of parole and the importance of adapting to new challenges and opportunities within the field.

On Tuesday, author and consultant, Erin Jones, captivated the audience with her keynote address. Jones's session was a highlight of the conference, as she shared her experiences and insights on effective community engagement and reentry strategies. Her dynamic presentation inspired attendees to think creatively about their roles in facilitating successful reentry and reducing recidivism.

A standout presentation was delivered by Jeff Patnode, ISRB Board Member, Corey McNally, ISRB Executive Director and Brent Borg, Program Manager for Sex Offense Treatment and Assessment Programs (SOTAP), discussed their ongoing collaboration between ISRB and SOTAP. Their session delved into innovative approaches to parole and highlighted successful partnerships and initiatives that have made a positive impact on community corrections. The collaborative efforts showcased in this presentation showed the importance of teamwork and shared goals in achieving meaningful outcomes.

The conference also celebrated exceptional contributions with special awards. Lori Ramsdell-Gilkey was honored with the prestigious Ben Baer Award for her significant service in parole and community corrections. Her dedication and impact on the field were recognized as exemplary, setting a high standard for others to aspire to.

Jeremy Garretson received the Community Service Award for his outstanding reentry work with the Department of Corrections through the non-profit organization Unkitawa. Garretson's efforts in supporting indigenous incarcerated individuals' as they transition back into society were acknowledged as transformative and vital for promoting successful reintegration and reducing recidivism.

In addition to the sessions and awards, the conference featured unique and meaningful contributions from the incarcerated population. Individuals from the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) designed the beautiful flowers used to decorate the tables, adding a personal and creative touch to the event. While incarnated individuals working within Correctional Industries designed lanterns that adorned the tables, showcasing the talent and potential of those within the correctional system.

The APAI 2024 Annual Training Conference was a resounding success, bringing together professionals dedicated to improving parole and community corrections from across the Nation and other countries. The conference brought a spirit of collaboration, innovation, and recognition, highlighting the essential work being done in the field and inspiring continued progress and dedication.
