NATIONAL DRUG AND NARCOTIC STRATEGY TO COMBAT...

The Government has put out a National Drug and Narcotic Strategy, with additional focus on the Police Force and all related agencies.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Biman Prasad highlighted this at the closing of the 2024 Gold N Water Carnival in Tavua last weekend.

He emphasised that this is to stop the spread, use and harm that drugs causes in our communities.

"To all our young people and those who may have come in contact with the use, supply, or anything to do with drugs, please say no to drugs, it is not only going to destroy you, but destroy your families and friends, and destroy the productivity, livelihood, and social and economic fabric of our country."

DPM Prasad highlighted that globally, we have witnessed the devastating impact of drugs, particularly hard drugs, which have caused destruction to countries, families, and individuals alike.

The Counter Narcotics Strategy 2023 - 2028 endorsed by Cabinet this year includes reducing demand for narcotics, reducing supply, reducing harm, legislative reform, data collection, analysis and information sharing, as well the establishment of a drug addiction treatment center, and partnership, coordination and international cooperation.

The Strategy is implemented through close collaboration between Government agencies, representatives from the private sector, Civil Society Organizations including faith-based organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, the media, and academic institutions.
