Attorney General Marshall Announces Court of Criminal Appeals Upholds Capital Murder for Hire Conviction in Mobile County

(Montgomery, Ala.)-Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of Henry Joiner, 62, of Montgomery, for murder. Joiner was convicted in the Montgomery County Circuit Court on November 10, 2022.

The evidence at trial showed that on the evening of May 29, 2020, the victim, Louis Miles lived in a room at the Destiny Inn in Montgomery. Witnesses overheard an angry phone call that Miles had received, and Miles asked a neighbor to go get a rifle. At this point, Joiner drove up in his car, walked toward the victim and assaulted him, and proceeded to shoot him several times, and then leave the scene.

Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey's office successfully prosecuted the case and obtained a guilty verdict. Joiner was sentenced to ninety-nine years imprisonment for his conviction. Joiner sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General's Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Joiner's conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, September 20, 2024.

Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Christopher D. Howell for his successful work on this case and thanks District Attorney Daryl Bailey and his staff for their valuable assistance in defending the murder conviction.
