Rep. Adams Celebrates Lowe’s Grant Awardees in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE - Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (D-NC-12) is celebrating a series of grant awards by Lowe's Hometowns, the nonprofit arm of Lowe's Companies.

According to an announcement on their website, the North Carolina-based home improvement retailer is supporting $100 million in grants over five years, serving 88+ community-nominated projects in 44 states and Washington, DC, for purposes such as affordable housing, community centers, parks and outdoors spaces, and facilities that serve veterans and first responders. Six of these projects are in Charlotte.

"You can't be a part of the community if you're not doing your part to take care of it," said Rep. Adams of the announcement. "I applaud Lowe's, a North Carolina company, for stepping up to invest in the community that serves them, by giving back to worthy causes."

  • The projects in Charlotte include the following: A Better World Charlotte - A Better World exists to deliver help and hope to at-risk youth in West Charlotte. The grant will support a facility makeover create an environment that not only facilitates learning but also shows students how valued they are.

  • A Brighter Day Outreach - A Brighter Day Outreach provides programs to help youth develop de-escalation and communication strategies with the goal of disrupting the school-to-prison cycle. The grant will fund the installation of an onsite food pantry, with a prefabricated trailer, pavers, plants, lighting and furniture. This will be the first food pantry within the Historic Hoskins community.

  • Champion House of Care - Champion House of Care provides personalized support for individuals with intellectual and development disabilities to develop the skills they need to be successful in the community. The grant will update the organization's playground equipment to be more inclusive and enjoyable for children of all abilities.

  • Envision Charlotte - Envision Charlotte & The Innovation Barn play a pivotal role in combating climate change by empowering, inspiring and equipping individuals and businesses with practical solutions. The project will enhance its outdoor community space, offering educational experiences on material management and sustainable practices.

  • Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office -The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office processes approximately 13,000 releases for individuals returning into the community from incarceration each year. Renovations and upgrades through Lowe's Hometowns will help transform the current lobby into a one-stop resource center for individuals to successfully transition back into the community and connect to wrap-around services and support.

  • OurBRIDGE for KIDS - The OurBRIDGE for KIDS' Charlotte is Home Center will expand the community's ability to welcome and guide newcomers as they start anew in the United States. The Lowe's Hometowns project will add an accessible entrance and update carpet, tile, flooring, paint, doors and hardware. Security and new signage will also be added.
