ENMU's Runnels Gallery Presents 'Beautiful Utility: An Exploration of Afghan Blankets—Known and Rediscovered' Exhibition

Portales, NM - September 3, 2024 - The Runnels Gallery at Eastern New Mexico University is thrilled to announce its latest exhibition, "Beautiful Utility," on display from August 16 through September 20, 2024.

This unique exhibition celebrates the artistry and heritage of Afghan blankets, a vibrant expression of textile craftsmanship that intertwines utility and beauty. The gallery is in the Golden Student Success Center (GSSC) and is open during GSSC hours with free admission to the public.

"Beautiful Utility" invites visitors to explore the intricate world of Afghan blankets, showcasing a variety of styles, including Granny Square, Chevron, Mile-a-Minute, and more. These blankets reflect a rich history that spans cultures and generations. The exhibition highlights the blankets as practical items and as cherished works of art that tell stories of creativity, tradition, and personal expression.

The display includes blankets that visitors can interact with-touch, unfold, and even snuggle with-allowing them to experience the warmth and comfort of these textiles in a cozy corner of the gallery. This tactile experience emphasizes the utilitarian nature of the art while inviting a personal connection with the pieces on display.

"Beautiful Utility" also addresses the broader theme of art's journey through time. Many of these blankets have been rediscovered in unexpected places like thrift stores and estate sales, raising poignant questions about the fate of art after it leaves its creator. The exhibition invites reflection on the transient nature of artistic recognition and the enduring impact of art on its audience, even when the artist's identity is unknown.

The Afghan blanket has evolved from a simple household item to a cultural icon with its colorful patterns and varied crochet techniques. The exhibition provides insights into the development of this textile art form, from its European origins in the 19th century to its resurgence during the 1960s counterculture movement and its modern-day revival as a sustainable and eco-friendly craft.

Join us at the Runnels Gallery to discover the "Beautiful Utility" of Afghan blankets and celebrate utilitarian art's enduring power through September 20.
