St. Pete Update # 2 - City of St. Petersburg Prepares for Potential Storm Impacts from Tropical Storm Debby

August 3, 2024 - As Tropical Storm Debby approaches St. Petersburg, the City of St. Petersburg continues to make preparations to minimize the impacts of the storm on the community.

Latest Storm Developments / Updates:

  • Tropical Storm Debby is expected to impact St. Petersburg on Sunday, Aug. 4.

  • A Tropical Storm Warning, Storm Surge Watch and Flood Watch are in effect for Pinellas County, meaning tropical storm conditions are likely this weekend.

  • The current forecast from the National Hurricane Center projects 2-4 ft. of storm surge in addition to heavy rainfall of 4-6 inches on Sunday, Aug. 4.

  • Heavy rains, storm surge, coastal flooding and gusty winds are possible across the area starting Sunday, Aug. 4.

St. Pete Resident Need-To-Knows:

  • Six emergency sandbag distribution locations are now closed. Operations will NOT be open Sunday, Aug. 4.

  • Brush Sites will open tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 4 - weather permitting - for regular operating hours. Stay tuned to social media for real-time updates.

City of St. Petersburg Storm Preparedness Overview To-Date:

Public Works Administration

  • Six emergency sandbag distribution locations are open today and conclude at 7 p.m. or until weather allows. Operations will not be open Sunday, Aug. 4.

  • So far, more than 31,000 sandbags have been distributed.

  • Teams have working on their pre-storm checklist that covers the entire City and low-lying areas to minimize storm impacts to the community.

  • The City's three wastewater treatment facilities have been confirmed to have the capacity to handle the additional rainfall.

Police Department and Fire Rescue Department:

  • Storm preparedness protocols are activated.

  • Team members are prepared to deploy after the storm passes to help with relief efforts.

Housing and Neighborhood Services Administration:

  • Brush Sites will open tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 4, weather permitting, for regular hours. Stay tuned to social media for real-time updates.

  • Codes Compliance Assistance Department and Neighborhood Relations Department staff completed pre-storm assessments.

  • Teams are preparing for debris pickup needs for after the storm.

City Development Administration:

  • Sunken Gardens will be closed Aug. 3-4 and re-open Monday, Aug. 5.

  • Staff has assessed boats at the Municipal Marina for safety and security.

  • Message boards have been placed to warn drivers of possible roadway flooding.

  • The South Core Parking Garage is accepting vehicles for residents who want to park their car above street level.

Community Enrichment Administration:

  • Closures are not expected at this time, but may change due to the weather.

  • Water levels at city pools have been lowered in anticipation of the additional rainfall.

  • Parks have been cleaned to minimize post-storm debris.

  • Teams are standing by to handle post-storm debris.
