(CHP MAXIMUM ENFORCEMENT PERIOD BEGINS WEDNESDAY, 11/27)

OAKLAND- Caltrans is reminding motorists to expect increased traffic across the Bay Area region during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend. To help minimize congestion, Caltrans will suspend all non-emergency roadwork in the Bay Area from Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Sunday night, Dec. 1.

Additionally, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be patrolling Bay Area highways with increased enforcement as part of their Maximum Enforcement Period, which begins Wednesday, Nov. 27.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, impaired driving increases significantly during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. In 2023, the Bay Area reported 86 wrong-way crashes, resulting in 13 fatalities, most of which involved a driver under the influence.

In response, Caltrans is implementing safety upgrades to the highway system aimed at reducing these incidents. CHP is intensifying enforcement efforts, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) continues to work tirelessly to prevent impaired driving. These agencies are joining forces to make our roads safer and protect lives.
