Salt Lake City Council to Consider Next Steps in Downtown Revitalization

The Council will hold an additional public hearing before considering a final decision.

SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 23, 2024 - The Salt Lake City Council released the below statement regarding their next steps in the proposed Sports, Entertainment, Culture and Convention District process.

"We realize the Council's upcoming vote on the Sports, Entertainment, Culture, and Convention District (SECC) and sales tax increase remains top of mind for many Salt Lakers. We have also learned of a survey being distributed in partnership with 'local leaders' about the SECC. The Council was not involved in any SECC surveys. We continue to work hard to make the best decision for our community and want to reassure you that openness and transparency are central to everything we do as a Council. Our focus remains on providing clear, objective information and acting in the best interest of Salt Lake City residents, including preserving public benefits.

Considering the factors listed below, we have elected to hold another public hearing-on Tuesday, Oct. 1-before a sales tax vote, even though it is not required. We plan to vote on the sales tax and participation agreement after the hearing.

• The state Revitalization Zone Committee unanimously approved the participation agreement on Sept. 17.
  
• The agreement retains the agreed-upon public benefits, which include preserving funding for affordable family housing, Japantown improvements, public art and more.
  
• State law outlines the next steps for the Council, which include considering voting on 1) a final endorsement of the participation agreement and 2) a potential sales tax increase.
  
• Once the Council votes on the sales tax, the State Tax Commission needs three months to implement it and begin collecting revenues.
