Shapiro Administration Recaps 2024 Southeast Pennsylvania Construction Season, Celebrates Completion of U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) Viaduct Project

Philadelphia, PA- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Engineering District 6 team is wrapping up the 2024 construction season that will include 47 new contracts worth an estimated $786 million to improve travel and safety on state highways and bridges across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties.

PennDOT District 6 Executive Din Abazi highlighted some of the region's milestones during a ribbon cutting event in Philadelphia today to mark the completion of the $107.2 million U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway) Wayne Junction Viaduct Project.

"We are thrilled to deliver on this investment to improve and extend the service life of our most critical structures," said Abazi. "PennDOT is committed to investing in rebuilding and updating our existing network to provide safe and efficient transportation for all modes of travel."

Statewide from January through October, 5,385 roadway miles were improved, including 1,941 miles of paving. In the same timeframe, work advanced on 401 state and locally owned bridges. Additionally, 356 construction contracts for highway, bridge, and other improvement projects were completed statewide through PennDOT's private-sector partners so far this year.

Since taking office, Governor Josh Shapiro has secured over $300 million in new infrastructure funding to maintain Pennsylvania's roads and bridges - reducing the Pennsylvania State Police's reliance on the Motor License Fund, delivering more funding for transportation while ensuring our law enforcement officers are sustainably funded.

In the southeast region, from January through September, 15 bridges were repaired, replaced, or preserved by PennDOT or industry forces, 134 miles of roadway were improved by department or partner crews, and 32 construction contracts for highway, bridge, and other improvement projects were completed through PennDOT's private-sector partners.

There are 118 construction projects with an estimated contract value of $3 billion anticipated to be active in 2024 across the five-county Philadelphia region.

Some notable projects that began construction this year include:

• U.S. 322 Improvement Project, Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County ($99.4 million).
• Five-Points Intersection Safety Improvement Project, Montgomery Township, Montgomery County ($14.2 million).
• Interstate 95 Bridges Rehabilitation Project, Philadelphia ($37.4 million).
• Langhorne-Yardley Road Intersection Improvement Project, Middletown Township, Bucks County ($10.6 million).
• U.S. 202/Route 926 Intersection Safety Improvement Project, Thornbury and Westtown townships, Chester County ($2.9 million).

Some notable projects that were completed or substantially completed this year include:

• U.S. 1/Roosevelt Expressway Viaduct Rehabilitation Project, Philadelphia ($107.2 million).
• Route 41/Route 926 Roundabout Safety Improvement Project, Londonderry Township, Chester County ($6.3 million).
• New Falls Road Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project, Bristol and Middletown townships, Bucks County ($2.1 million).
• Smithbridge Road Bridge Replacement Project, Concord Township, Delaware County ($1.7 million).
• Bethlehem Pike Safety Improvement Project, Springfield and Whitemarsh townships, Montgomery County ($1.7 million).

Some notable projects that continued construction this year include:

• I-95 CAP Project, Philadelphia ($329 million).
• U.S. 1 Improvement Project, Bensalem and Middletown townships, Bucks County ($116 million).
• U.S. 422 Improvement Project, Lower Pottsgrove Township, Montgomery County, ($83.6 million).
• Route 420 Bridge Replacements, Prospect Park Borough and Tinicum Township, Delaware County. ($35.8 million).
• Boot Road over Amtrak Bridge Replacement, East Caln Township, Chester County. ($13.3 million).

Many of the projects in 2024 are supported and accelerated by the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). In 2024 alone, the BIL brought in at least $115 million in additional funding to the district 6 region to be allocated by the department and the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) for projects in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties.
