Mayoral Proclamation - Savanna Greywind Day

Savanna's life and tragic death call attention to the need for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women's awareness and justice initiatives.

WHEREAS, Savanna Greywind was born August 9, 1995 and she lived and worked in Fargo; and

WHEREAS, Savanna's life and tragic death call attention to the need for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women's awareness and justice initiatives; and

WHEREAS, according to the US Department of Justice, Indigenous women are murdered at a rate 10 times the national average of any other race per capita and the number of missing and murdered Indigenous women in the US is impossible to calculate due to missing data; and

WHEREAS, The City of Fargo has joined in solidarity with Canada, where for more than 20 years there have been annual marches, events and awareness-raising endeavors, to spur awareness in North Dakota of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women; and

WHEREAS, Savanna's date of birth is designated as Savanna Greywind Day in celebration of the life she lived; and

WHEREAS, such designation be in honor of Savanna's life and the life of her surviving child rather than the manner of her death.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Dr. Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of Fargo, do hereby proclaim August 9 to be

SAVANNA GREYWIND DAY

in The City of Fargo and call upon the citizens to observe this day in recognition of fallen Indigenous women with appropriate awareness programs and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of The City of Fargo, North Dakota to be affixed this 5th day of August, 2024.
