Celebrate Virginia Archaeology Month with Alexandria Archaeology

This October, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources celebrates Archaeology Month with special events and programs throughout the state. The City of Alexandria has a long history of archaeological stewardship, built on decades of community-based archaeological efforts. Join the celebrations by attending events and programs highlighting important archaeological sites and preservation efforts across the City.

Pop-Up Archaeology at the "Buried Ships of Robinson Landing" Exhibit
Friday, October 4, 4:30 - 7 p.m.
7 Pioneer Mill Way
Step inside the temporary Buried Ships of Robinson Landing windowfront exhibit for a unique chance to see scale models of three 18th-century vessel remnants excavated in 2018. Archaeologists will be on-site to explain how these ships were used to create new land along Alexandria's waterfront. This free exhibit is located at the corner of the Strand and Pioneer Mill Way.

Ben Brenman Awards

The Alexandria Archaeological Commission (AAC) will present the Ben Brenman Awards to individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to the archaeology of Alexandria.

Slip Into the Past at Art Safari
Saturday, October 19, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Alexandria Archaeology Museum, 105 N Union Street, #327
Join us at the Alexandria Archaeology Museum to experiment with 19th-century pottery slip designs, such as marbling and dendritic patterns. Visitors can also apply their own temporary tattoo inspired by transfer-printed ceramic designs, while supplies last. This family-friendly activity is part of the larger Art Safari event at the Torpedo Factory Art Center.
