E-waste recovery now regulated

On 1 July 2024, a regulation that bans the disposal of electronics and electronic items in landfill so these valuable resources can be recovered came into effect.

City of Greater Geradlton Mayor Jerry Clune said the community will greatly benefit from the new regulations.

"Electronics and electrical goods have become essential items in our lives resulting in e-waste becoming one of the fastest growing waste streams we have," he said.

"Preventing these items from going to landfill means the precious metals they contain will be recovered instead.

"It will also protect people from the fire risk the batteries in many of these items pose when disposed of in their rubbish bins and protect the environment from the hazardous materials contained in e-waste."

The e-waste ban includes the following items:

  • Screens, computers, laptops, tablets and phones
  • Lighting and lamps
  • Large appliances
  • Batteries and temperature exchange equipment
  • Medical devices

Members of the community can safely dispose their e-waste at the Meru Resource Recovery Station or head to the TechCollect website here to find a drop-off location near you.
