Wexford, Pa. - Hospital leadership and pediatric clinicians from Allegheny Health Network (AHN) officially unveiled a new, beautiful mosaic at AHN Wexford Hospital earlier this month. Local pediatric patients, as well as community members, were commissioned to create the art installation, which now hangs in the pediatric care space within the hospital.
The unveiling of the mural also marks the one-year anniversary of AHN Wexford launching its expansion of pediatric inpatient capabilities for children who have acute medical conditions or may have undergone elective procedures that require additional observation.
The mural, themed "Caring for our Community," comprises thousands of tiles with personal depictions of family, unity, health, hometown and more. When one steps back, the individual tiles create a vibrant mosaic depicting the hospital with a rainbow in the background and children playing outdoors among various wildlife in the foreground.
Each tile within the mosaic is a personal piece of artwork created by a community member.
AHN Wexford Hospital partnered with Project S.N.A.P., a national nonprofit organization that uses art and storytelling to empower people of all ages, to develop the mural, engaging the Wexford community to celebrate the world-class care for pediatric patients at the hospital.
"On behalf of the entire team at AHN Wexford, I want to extend a sincere thank you to each and every individual who contributed to this striking installation," said Allan Klapper, MD, president of AHN Wexford. "We're beyond pleased to install this artwork in our hallways and also use it as an opportunity to celebrate the one-year mark of formally expanding our pediatric capabilities for children and families throughout the communities we serve."
In September 2023, AHN announced its expansion of pediatric capabilities at Wexford Hospital, providing children and families in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh with new, convenient access to high-quality inpatient care for children with acute medical conditions as well as those with orthopaedic and ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions. The expansion also included specialized accommodations for neurodiverse children. Since its opening in 2021, AHN Wexford has been equipped to provide emergency care for children of all ages.
The robust pediatric care team at the hospital now includes 24/7 pediatric hospitalists, nurses specifically trained in pediatrics, pediatric physical and occupational therapists and a child life specialist.
AHN Wexford also features a bustling labor and delivery program, and since its opening has welcomed more than 4,000 babies into the world.
The AHN Wexford pediatric mosaic can be viewed online and individuals can zoom in to find their own artwork and see how it fits into the big picture. For more information on AHN Wexford hospital and its full spectrum of care services, please visit ahn.org.
