Camera enforcement starts Monday in three school zones

Aug. 21, 2024 - With the start of a new school year on Monday, Aug. 26, the City of Hampton will begin using traffic cameras as part of a safety program focusing on school zones.

During the morning and afternoon hours, when students are being dropped off and picked up, flashing lights remind motorists of a reduced speed limit. The city will now use camera enforcement at specific locations, starting on Monday at Bethel and Hampton high schools and Hunter Andrews Pre-K-8. Traffic studies showed these schools to be the most prone to speeders and dangerous drivers. The program is scheduled to expand to Kecoughtan High School on Sept. 9; Jones Magnet School on Sept. 20; and Lindsay Middle and Machen Elementary schools on Sept. 30.

There will be a 30-day grace period during which motorists will receive written warnings. After that grace period, violators will receive citations and $100 fines.

The city is working with the contractor Verra Mobility on the implementation of this program.
