Tree Planting Scheduled for Oct. 12; Volunteers Needed to Help

Ames Parks and Recreation Department is holding a tree-planting event in the Twain Street neighborhood beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12. Volunteers are needed to help plant and mulch 45 new trees. This project is funded by the Community Forestry Grant Program from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

"This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to be involved in diversifying our urban trees," said Gabriele Edwards, Ames City Forester. "Many trees have been removed in response to the emerald ash borer, so tree planting events provide a great opportunity to repopulate."

Interested volunteers should meet at the corner of Twain Street and Dickinson Avenue at 9 a.m. Shovels and rakes will be provided, and the holes will be pre-dug.

The Parks and Recreation Department manages 40 parks and offers approximately 200 athletic, aquatic, instructional, and wellness programs. For more information, go to the Parks and Recreation homepage at www.amesparkrec.org or call the Community Center at 515.239.5350.
