10/09/2024 - Olympia Recognizes Oct. 14 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day

Olympia Recognizes Oct. 14 as Indigenous Peoples' Day

At its October 8 meeting, the Olympia City Council proclaimed Oct. 14, 2024, as Indigenous Peoples' Day in Olympia, urging all Olympians to continue reflecting on the experiences and contributions of Indigenous people and amplifying their voices far beyond this day.

The City honors and acknowledges the Indigenous people who have stewarded this land since time immemorial and who still inhabit the area today. The Steh-Chass Band of Indigenous people of the Squaxin Island Tribe and City of Olympia honor the Medicine Creek Treaty and have established a strong government-to-government relationship. An accord signed in 2021 commits both governing bodies to coordination on economic and infrastructure opportunities, natural resource protections, climate change response and opportunities for healthy cultural exchange through public art, education and community service.

Join us in celebration Monday, Oct. 14

You can join the Squaxin Island Tribe and the City of Olympia to celebrate local Indigenous culture, history, and communities from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, 2024. The event will be at Squaxin Park, 2600 East Bay Drive NE. Enjoy a celebration that features performances, speakers and food. Families are welcome. Admission is free. For more information, visit the City website.

Parking at Squaxin Park is limited, so attendees who won't be walking from nearby neighborhoods are encouraged to carpool or bicycle. The City of Olympia is offering complimentary event shuttle service from the east side of the Olympia Farmer's Market District parking lot every 30 minutes from 11 am to 3 pm.
