DLA employees beautify community roadside

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. -

Members of the Defense Logistics Agency team assigned to Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna, removed debris and trash along a one-mile stretch of Normandy Memorial Drive in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's statewide Adopt A Highway program, Oct. 19.

The semiannual cleanup effort marked the latest event in the installation's 27-year partnership with the PennDOT program.

"It's the little things like this that let the community know we care," said Heather Hoban, chief, Environmental Management Division, DLA Installation Management at Susquehanna. "It's rewarding when we can do something to both protect the environment and give back to our neighbors."

13 volunteers, comprised of DLA Installation Management at Susquehanna and DLA Distribution, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, employees and their families, collected 26 bags of trash and debris.

"When we see families bringing their children to these events, it's inspiring to know that they are encouraging future generations to protect the environment and serve the community," Hoban said. "I'm extremely grateful for all of the employees, military and civilian, and their families who have come out to help support this initiative over the past 27 years."

The Adopt A Highway program requires a two year commitment from participants and covers the areas of state highway rights-of-way, interchange areas, traffic islands or two-mile sections of roadway. PennDOT provides materials to maintain the adopted areas and posts roadway signs recognizing the community partner's participation.
