FPD Traffic Stop Leads to Gun Seizure and Arrest

The Frederick Police Department's Major Crimes Unit has arrested a juvenile male on handgun charges

On August 22, 2024, around 12:15 p.m., the Frederick Police Department's Major Crimes Unit initiated a traffic stop on the driver of a vehicle in the area of Madison Street and Carrollton Street, in Frederick City. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop for the detective's police vehicle's emergency lights and siren and continued driving to the area of Logan Street and Sherman Avenue before stopping. Once the vehicle stopped, three passengers exited the vehicle and fled. The driver, identified as Anthony Lee Ferguson, Jr., age 19, was immediately detained at the vehicle.

As one of the passengers fled, the Detective Sergeant who initiated the traffic stop observed indicators of the person being armed and attempting to conceal a weapon. This person, later identified as a 17-year-old juvenile male, was located and detained in the general area of where he was last observed running. A search of the area where the suspect was observed before being apprehended revealed three discarded handguns. A fourth handgun was found nearby. Out of the four handguns located, one was listed as stolen through Virginia and two others were privately made firearms.

The juvenile male suspect was arrested based on the Detective Sergeant's observations and evidence obtained. The juvenile male suspect was charged as an adult at the Frederick County Adult Detention Center on firearms-related charges.

A third suspect involved in this incident, identified as Daeante Xavier Sewell, age 22, was located hiding within a fenced-in backyard of a nearby residence where the traffic stop occurred. Sewell did not have the owner's permission to be in the backyard and was subsequently charged with 4th-degree burglary. Sewell was charged via criminal citation and later released.

The driver of the vehicle, Ferguson, was charged with must-appear traffic citations for fleeing and eluding and operating an unregistered vehicle, and a payable traffic citation for failing to stop at a stop sign. Ferguson was released from police custody after receiving the appropriate citations.
