Speed Suspected Factor in Jefferson Parish Crash That Killed Motorcyclist

Terrytown - On Sunday, July 28, 2024, shortly after 11:30 am, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B were notified of a multi-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on LA 428 near Northbrook Drive in Terrytown. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 36-year-old Frank Mayfield of Gretna.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Mayfield was driving a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja Motorcycle at a high rate of speed north on LA 428 approaching Northbrook Drive. At the same time, a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck exited a private driveway onto LA 428 near the intersection of Northbrook Drive. The Toyota entered the intersection and was waiting to turn left onto LA 428. As a result, the front of the Kawasaki impacted the driver's side of the Toyota.

Mayfield, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, suffered fatal injuries and died on scene. Standard toxicology samples were collected from Mayfield and submitted for analysis. The driver of the Toyota was uninjured, displayed no signs of impairment and voluntarily submitted to a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected. This crash remains under investigation.

Vehicle operators should practice safe and responsible behavior, including following speed limits, wearing a DOT-approved helmet while on a motorcycle or a seatbelt in a vehicle, and never operating their vehicle while impaired. It is crucial to remember that speeding decreases reaction time, increases stopping distance, heightens the risk of losing control of your vehicle, and reduces the effectiveness of safety devices such as helmets and seatbelts in the event of a crash.
