Medway já tem 16 novas locomotivas elétricas interoperáveis de última geração a circular na Península Ibérica

The Medway railway announced that it has received the last four Stadler Euro6000 locomotives, in addition to the 12 already in operation, and which were put into circulation last week, first in Spain and soon also in Portugal. The 16 new electric locomotives and another 113 wagons are part of an investment of more than 90 million euros made at the end of 2021.

The first equipment arrived in January this year and was presented on the occasion of the 8th anniversary that marked the start of Medway's operations in Portugal.

Carlos Vasconcelos, president of Medway, highlighted at the time that the new rolling stock contributes to reinforcing the company's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint: "This investment does not consist of a simple renewal or update of our fleet. It's much more than that. We are talking about interoperable, state-of-the-art electric locomotives for an Iberian service."

It grew 35% in Spain last year

Medway stood out from the competition in rail freight transport in Spain, in 2023, with a 34.5% growth in volumes handled, according to data from the Annual Rail Sector Report, now released by the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC).

Last year, Medway was the operator that recorded the greatest growth in activity in the neighboring country: it grew 34.5% in net tons, with a total of 1.4 million, and 40.9% in ton-km (596 million ).

All 11 rail freight transport operators operating in Spain transported 21.6 million tons, a result that represents a year-on-year drop of 10.1% and confirms the drop that began in 2015, being the worst since 2021, according to indicates the regulatory entity of the neighboring country.

The drop was almost mainly due to Renfe Mercadorias, which fell by another 19.4% to 11.8 million net tons.
