(BOWIE, Md.) - BSU Theater students in the Department of Fine and Performing Artsorchestrated a moving and convincing production of Lynn Nottage's acclaimed play "Fabulation, or The Re-Education of Undine," by directing, acting, and serving in other vital roles.

The play tells the story of a successful African American publicist in Manhattan whose life unravels when her husband absconds with her money, forcing her to return to working-class roots in Brooklyn, confronting family ties, personal loss, and the need to redefine herself.

The play's three-day run in the Dionne Warwick Theater offered the campus and broader community a powerful exploration of resilience, identity, and transformation. Senior Alexis Kennedy, who directed her first total production, noted that "Fabulation" was particularly timely.

"Interestingly, we chose to produce a play like this with the current political climate," she said. "What we as students took away from the production is the resilience of Black women amid trials and tribulations, and how we get things done."

Kennedy shared that the experience of directing the play, especially alongside her fellow students, has been a journey of leadership, collaboration, and empathy.

The play allowed Bowie State students to develop their craft in real-world theater settings. Senior theatre arts major Malaysha Sabria, who served as the lighting assistant, reflected on the play's authenticity.

"This is a very realistic play," Sabria said. "Even though you go through those ups and downs, there are always those moments to breathe and laugh."

Portraying the character of Grandma, senior music technology major Erica Harrell brought depth to the performance by addressing the complexities of family secrets. "I'm able to bring people's stories to the stage," Harrell said. "An addict can be somebody who's living in your own home, and you may not even know it."
