Internal Medicine Physicians Concerned about Inaccurate Information about Abortion

WASHINGTON October 28, 2024 - The American College of Physicians (ACP) is concerned about inaccurate and misleading information about abortion services that is being distributed in the state of Florida in relation to a ballot measure that would add protection for access to abortion to the state constitution. Patients must have access to the full range of necessary reproductive health services, including abortion, and they need to have accurate information about these services. Abortion is safer than many other common medical procedures; complication rates from abortion are extremely low.

ACP is committed to stopping and preventing the spread of medical disinformation and misinformation, and vigorously supports the use of science and scientific expertise, based on the best available evidence. Further, ACP believes that individuals have the right to make their own decisions, in partnership with their physician or health care professional, on matters affecting their individual reproductive health, including about types of contraceptive methods they use or whether or not to continue a pregnancy. ACP strongly opposes medically unnecessary government restrictions on any health care services. ACP is committed to ensuring that our patients can access necessary services, and that governmental interference does not prevent access to evidence-based care.
