Vivian Toy Wins A.A.J.A. Executive Leadership Award

Vivian Toy, senior editor for Culture & Careers, has been named Alumnus of the Year by the Asian American Journalists Association's Executive Leadership Program. Vivian was surprised with the award at the A.A.J.A. national convention in Austin, Tex.

The Executive Leadership Program has been developing Asian American journalism managers for the industry for almost 30 years. The program brings together mid- and senior-level journalists to explore issues of identity, organizational dynamics and how to tackle change management. Vivian graduated from the program in 2010.

In presenting the award to Vivian, A.A.J.A. highlighted her work at The Times in the newsroom and for the Asian Network employee resource group: "For nearly 30 years at The New York Times, Vivian Toy has been a tireless champion for A.A.J.A. and of A.A.P.I. representation in newsroom culture, coverage and hiring. And she has done so with grace and nuance, and even as she has always maintained the rigor of the newsroom's journalistic standards."

The association continued, "As the head of the Culture and Careers team, Vivian's mission is to elevate the newsroom's culture and make it more welcoming and inclusive to all. She has done so by promoting an inclusive hiring process and providing 1:1 support to employees across the newsroom - many of those seeking support from Vivian are people of color."

Congratulations!
