FIATA brought together its Association Members and Individual Members for its annual FIATA Statutory General Meeting (SGM) held virtually on 28 June 2024.
Around 100 participants attended the meeting where reports from the Presidency on the 2023 activities and financial matters were approved, including the adoption of the budget for 2025.
FIATA President, Turgut Erkeskin, touched on the key achievements of 2023 for the Federation. He highlighted the strengthening of the global logistics community through face-to-face interactions at various events, including the 2023 FIATA World Congress in Brussels, the Regional Field Meetings in Kampala and Da Nang and other conferences. Another major focus was the advancement of the digital transformation with the successful roll-out of the FIATA Digital Bill of Lading (eFBL), enhancing operational efficiency for freight forwarders in the logistics industry. The Federation also strengthened its global influence and financial sustainability through strategic initiatives such as the FIATA Partnership Programme and increased social media presence. Policy advocacy in the global logistics sector at the regional level and through high-level meetings with government officials was also noted, in addition to the collective effort in influencing the EU's decision not to renew the Consortia Block Exemption Regulation (CBER). Finally, the President celebrated the success in obtaining the observer status at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) after 20 years of effort.
The SGM adopted the Presidency's motion to implement a new Membership Fee Calculation Scheme, that has been in development for the last two years by the FIATA Presidency with the support of MCI Brussels, which reflects FIATA's diverse global membership and its mission to represent and defend the economic and business interests of its Members. This scheme will ensure a fair, transparent and sustainable approach for current and future Members and will meet the legal requirements of external auditors. A 3-year phase in plan was agreed, upon FIATA Presidency's proposal.
In line with the new Membership Fee Scheme, which is tailored to the economic capacity of each Association Member, the SGM also adopted a simplified voting system for Association Members.
Finally, the SGM confirmed the decision of the Extended Board to select the Federazione Nazionale delle Imprese di Spedizioni Internazionali (FEDESPEDI) to host the 2026 FIATA World Congress in Milan, Italy. The 2026 FIATA World Congress will be especially memorable as it will mark the 100th anniversary of the Federation. Milan is considered the business capital of Italy and a key logistic hub due to its central location in Europe, proximity to major highways and railways, and access to three international airports. In terms of accessibility, the city is one of the best-connected international cities in the world. We look forward to celebrating this special occasion with our Members!
