Casey Statement on Sale of Regional, Moses Taylor, and Wilkes-Barre Hospitals

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) released a statement following the announcement of Woodbridge Healthcare's purchase of Regional and Moses Taylor Hospitals in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in Wilkes-Barre:

"Northeastern Pennsylvanians rely on Regional, Moses Taylor, and Wilkes-Barre Hospitals for their care and they deserve health centers that are putting their patients over profits. I will be monitoring this deal closely to see if new ownership will prioritize re-establishing trust within the community by offering safe, affordable, and accessible care for its patients and fair treatment and compensation for its workers."

Senator Casey has repeatedly fought to keep hospitals open and ensure that Pennsylvanians have reliable access to health care. Last year, Casey led the charge to prevent funding cuts to rural hospitals across the country. He also introduced Rural Hospital Support Act, which seeks to permanently extend two key Medicare rural hospital programs and establish a new rebasing year - preventing closures that would disrupt access to care for individuals in rural communities. Last Friday, he sent a letter to Community Health Systems, the current owner of Regional Moses Taylor, and Wilkes-Barre Hospitals, expressing concerns about the company's business practices, which often prioritize profit over quality of care, and calling on the company to ensure that patients can continue accessing quality care at the facilities.
