* Update – Suspect Arrested * Delaware State Police Investigating a Homicide in Ellendale

The Delaware State Police have arrested 14-year-old Angelo Rodriguez for murder following a homicide that occurred in Ellendale last month.

On June 9, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., troopers responded to the 12000 block of North Old State Road, for a shooting. When troopers arrived, they learned that 17-year-old Ahniya Coverdale had been shot and taken to the Ellendale Fire Company. She was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where she died. A second victim, a 19-year-old man, later responded to an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Through investigative means, the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit identified Angelo Rodriguez as the suspect. On July 22, 2024, he was indicted by a Sussex County Grand Jury.

On Tuesday, July 23, 2024, detectives arrested Rodriguez, he was charged with the crimes listed below, arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 3, and committed to the Department of Corrections on a $300,000 cash bond.

  • Murder 1st Degree (Felony)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony (Felony) - 3 counts
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited (Felony) - 2 counts
  • Assault 1st Degree (Felony)
  • Reckless Endangering 1st Degree (Felony) - 8 counts
  • Theft of a Firearm (Felony)

The Homicide Unit continues to investigate this incident. Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding this case to contact Detective M. Csapo by calling (302) 741-2729.
