Kearns and local officials conduct zombie property update in Depew

Dangerous Zombie Property Structure Demolished in Depew

Erie County, NY- Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns, Mayor Kevin Peterson and the Western New York Law Center provided an update to a neighborhood after a demolition crew took down a dilapidated ZOMBIE structure in the Village of Depew.

The property was reported to the Erie County Clerk's Zombie Initiative, as well as village officials, in early October of this year. It was quickly determined by Code Enforcement Officials that the garage structure wascollapsing and unsafe, therefore it had to be demolished. The house on the property also violated numerous Village building codes, pieces of the roof were blowing into neighbors' yards, and the property's yard had become overgrown.

"We were pleased that once the service provider was made aware of the hazardous issues with the property, that they took immediate action,' said Kearns. "Our ZOMBIE Initiative exemplifies how when local government and community partners work together for the betterment of the community." Added Kearns, "In this case, everyone is a winner as the home is being maintained by the service provider until the property can be sold."

The ZOMBIES Initiative is a collaboration between the Western New York Law Center's Vacant and Abandoned Property Department and the Erie County Clerk's Office. "Our goal is to hold mortgage servicers accountable and find solutions to blight in communities caused by Vacant and Abandoned houses," stated Kearns.
