BOE's 2024 Annual Taxpayers' Bill of Rights Hearing: August 27
Taxpayers and Stakeholders are Invited to Participate and Provide Input

Sacramento - The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) will hold its annual Taxpayers' Bill of Rights Hearing on August 27, 2024, scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. in conjunction with the Board's August 2024 Meeting. Taxpayers and stakeholders are invited to attend in person, participate by phone, or submit comments online on items described in the BOE's Taxpayers' Rights Advocate's Annual Report, and share suggestions, comments, or concerns on California's property tax system. Taxpayers and stakeholders can also present any ideas or changes to the Alcoholic Beverage Tax Law or comment on their experiences or issues regarding BOE services.

"Serving taxpayers and ensuring fairness is the heart of what we do. Public participation in the Taxpayers' Bill of Rights Hearing gives the Board the opportunity to address problems and make recommendations as the public's elected tax representatives," said BOE Chair Sally J. Lieber. "Input from taxpayers is vital to successful, fair, and transparent administration of the property tax system and the Alcoholic Beverage Tax program."

The California State Board of Equalization (BOE) is the only elected tax board in the country, and it is comprised of four Equalization District Members and the State Controller. Since 1879, the BOE's constitutional and statutory duties include the oversight of the 58 County Assessors to ensure assessment practices are uniform and consistent statewide. In addition, the BOE directly assesses the property of regulated railroads and certain public utilities, collects the Private Railroad Car Tax, and is responsible for the Alcoholic Beverage Tax and Tax on Insurers. BOE's critical role in property tax administration by promoting fair and equitable assessments protects the tax dollars that schools, local communities, and the State of California depend on every day.
