Partnerships Accelerate City Of Boise's Housing Goals

July 16, 2024

Boise's city council will consider options for scaling down operations at the Red Lion at their work session this afternoon as permanent supportive housing efforts ramp up and short-term housing solutions for families expand through community partnerships.

"From my earliest days in office, as we watched cities across the nation navigate a housing crisis, ensuring more homes for more people at Boise budgets has been a relentless and central focus at the city," said Mayor Lauren McLean. "We invested in affordable homes for our workforce, short-term shelter for families, and long-term, permanent housing with supportive services for those who need it."

Working closely with shelter operators, Interfaith Sanctuary and the Boise Rescue Mission, city staff and local partners have developed pathways to keep residents safely sheltered while preparing to scale down reliance on rooms at the Red Lion and move residents into permanent homes.

"There is no local issue more complex, more challenging, more demanding of true partnership than housing," said Mclean. "I am excited about the progress we've made and the commitment our community has shown to making sure everyone who needs a home in Boise, has a home in Boise. I'm especially grateful to the Boise Rescue Mission, who has committed to taking in those with medical needs, and to Interfaith Sanctuary, who has been caring for guests at the Red Lion since we began."

Last week, the city allocated $5.5 million in gap financing to partner with Pacific Companies on 95 new homes for families exiting homelessness. New Path 2.0 will provide wrap around support services for residents funded through the Supportive Housing Investment Fund (SHIF) a partnership with the Idaho Community Foundation, businesses, and local philanthropists.

"We're fortunate to live in a community where everyone wants to be part of the solution," said Council President Colin Nash. "Developers have partnered with us to create affordable housing, local non-profits continue to serve our most vulnerable residents, and philanthropy is stepping in as well. It's exciting to see long-term solutions coming to fruition."

Prior to the city's investment in housing affordability, fewer than 50 affordable homes were being built each year. In the next three years, an average of 400 affordable homes are expected to welcome residents.
