Kildee Introduces Bill to Strengthen Ethical Standards of Supreme Court

FLINT-Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) has introduced new legislation to prohibit Supreme Court justices and other federal judges from accepting a gift valued at more than $50, helping to strengthen ethical standards and restore integrity in the High Court.

Congressman Kildee's High Court Gift Ban Act would prohibit Supreme Court justices from receiving gifts valued at more than $50. This brings the Supreme Court in line with similar ethical standards applying to Members of Congress and other federal officials.

"The Supreme Court is the highest court in the land, often deciding cases that involve our most precious rights and freedoms. Every American should be concerned by reports of Supreme Court justices taking millions of dollars in undisclosed, extravagant gifts from special interests," said Congressman Kildee. "I'm proud to introduce this legislation to raise the ethical standards and strengthen the integrity of the Supreme Court, to protect our democracy."

Congressman Kildee has long supported efforts to raise ethics standards and restore the faith of the American people in their government. Previously, Congressman Kildee introduced the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal and Transparency Act, which would require the Supreme Court to adopt rules governing the disclosure of gifts, travel, and income received by justices and establish procedures to investigate complaints of judicial misconduct. Kildee has also supported bipartisan legislation, the Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust (TRUST) in Congress Act, would ban Members of Congress, their spouses and their dependent children from trading stocks while in office.
