Travel Advisory: Mcguinness Boulevard Redesign Begins This Week

New Design of McGuinness Boulevard Will Dramatically Improve Safety for Drivers, Pedestrians, and Cyclists

Drivers Advised to Expect Delays During Implementation

NEW YORK - New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez announced today that roadway work has begun this past week to implement the redesign of the southern portion of McGuinness Boulevard-and that drivers should expect delays during the implementation process. Construction is expected to span several weeks, weather permitting.

"Our redesign will make McGuinness Boulevard safer for everyone on the street-whether you're biking, walking, or riding a bicycle," said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. "We anticipate some minor delays during our implementation and we appreciate New Yorkers' patience as we deliver this life-saving work."

Preparatory work on the corridor has already begun, and NYC DOT expects more robust roadway reconfiguration to begin on Monday with the removal of existing street markings.The bulk of the work will occur during the daytime hours, weather permitting. The agency expects the project to reach substantial completion this year.

This portion of the redesign of McGuinness Boulevard will take place from Calyer Street to Meeker Avenue and will include the installation of pedestrian islands to improve visibility at intersections and shorten the crossing distance for pedestrians, as well as a parking-protected bike lane in each direction. The new design will also include, in each direction: one vehicle moving lane, one parking lane; and dedicated space to facilitate smooth loading/unloading without blocking the vehicle or bicycle lanes during peak periods of activity.

This work builds on the redesign conducted in 2023 on the northern section of McGuinness Boulevard, where NYC DOT installed a barrier-protected bike lane connecting to the Pulaski Bridge.
