FOSTERING ECONOMIC GROWTH FOR WOMEN AND YOUTH

"The Ministry for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises is committed to fostering inclusive economic growth, with a specific focus on expanding the role of women and youth in Co-operatives."

This was highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications, Manoa Kamikamica on how the Ministry is working towards increasing participation of women and youth in Co-operatives in Parliament recently.

DPM Kamikamica added that Co-operatives are ideal institutions to encourage more women and youth participation in economic activities.

"Co-operatives can also play a valuable role in the empowerment of women and youth through the creation of income generating opportunities."

The Ministry has implemented strategic programs aimed at increasing female participation in co-operatives. Between 2023 and 2024, there has been a large growth in women participation in Co-operatives across the nation.

Hon. Kamikamica added, in the Western Division alone we witnessed a remarkable 148% increase in female membership, raising the proportion of women in Co-operatives from 12% to 24%.

"This growth is the result of comprehensive outreach campaigns, tailored training programs, and financial support systems designed to make Co-operatives more accessible to women."

DPM Kamikamica added that looking ahead, the Ministry is committed to further increasing the participation of women and youth in Co-operatives through more gender- and youth-sensitive policies. Over the last 3 years a total of 398 women and youth have been appointed to board positions in respective co-operatives.
