At approximately 11:40 PM on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, Sacramento County Sheriff's North Patrol Deputies responded to an apartment on the 6600 block of Moraga Drive in Carmichael regarding the report of shots fired inside of an apartment during an argument between roommates. Deputies arrived on scene and confirmed no one was hurt but learned the suspect, a 24-year-old male, fled on foot armed with a revolver-style handgun. Deputies searched the area and located the suspect a short time later. They attempted to take him into custody, but he fled on foot and out of their sight.
Additional Sheriff's Units, including members of the Sheriff's SWAT Team (Special Enforcement Detail/SED), K9, Unmanned Aerial Surveillance (UAS/drone) team, and negotiators from the Sheriff's Critical Incident Negotiations Team (CINT) arrived on scene. Officers from the Roseville Police Department, Citrus Heights Police Department, and Deputies from the Placer County Sheriff's Office also responded to assist.
At approximately 2:40 AM (Thursday, November 14, 2024), STAR (the Sheriff's Helicopter) located the suspect on top of the roof of a house a short distance away on the 6800 block of Ashfield Way in Fair Oaks, still armed with a handgun. Deputies also quickly determined that the home's occupants had no affiliation with the suspect. Deputies deployed two armored vehicles to isolate and surround the suspect while negotiators tried to convince the suspect, who was still armed on the roof, to surrender peacefully.
Just after 3:45 AM, the suspect fired his gun toward Deputies, when three Deputies from the Sheriff's SWAT Team returned ire, mortally wounding him. Fortunately, no one else was hurt.
The investigation into this incident is still ongoing and will be conducted by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Professional Standards Division, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the Sheriff's Office's jurisdiction. An independent review of the incident will be conducted by the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. In accordance with the Sheriff's Office policies and procedures, the Deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
Identification of the deceased will be made by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office in accordance with their protocols.
