EBRD supports Garanti BBVA Leasing with green financing

  • €25 million loan supports green investment projects
  • Loan issued under EBRD's Türkiye GEFF II programme
  • Proceeds will contribute to country's green transition

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a €25 million loan to Türkiye 's Garanti BBVA Leasing for on-lending to sub-borrowers implementing green investments such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate resilience measures.

The loan is being issued under the EBRD's Türkiye Green Economy Financing Facility, contributing to the country's green transition.

The project also includes a technical cooperation package focusing on gender-responsive activities to help foster equal access to climate finance for men and women, including a gender baseline assessment and awareness-raising to help address gender-specific supply and demand obstacles.

Addressing climate change is a national priority for Türkiye, which is aiming to reach net-zero by 2053. Including leasing companies in the diversification of green financing is essential to green efforts, as leasing companies provide innovative financial solutions that make renewable energy systems, energy-efficient technologies and low-carbon machinery more affordable for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The EBRD's Deputy Head of Türkiye, Oksana Yavorskaya, welcomed this partnership, saying: "By bridging the financing gap for industries transitioning to green operations, leasing companies help accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices across sectors. We are happy to be partnering with a key player like Garanti BBVA Leasing to continue the great track record of our green financing frameworks."

Selahattin Güldü, General Manager of Garanti BBVA Leasing, said: "We are so glad to be adding a new facility to our longstanding relationship with the EBRD. The green loan we are receiving under the EBRD's GEFF programme will be used to finance many energy-saving projects for SMEs in the country that attach importance to energy efficiency and want to invest in green and renewable energy."

Garanti BBVA Leasing, a leasing company established in 1990, is a fully owned subsidiary of Garanti BBVA, one of Türkiye's largest financial institutions.

The EBRD is one of Türkiye's key investors, with more than €21 billion committed through 465 projects and trade finance limits since 2009, most of it in the private sector.
