City of St. Petersburg Waives Permitting Fees, Sets Up Remote Permitting Sites for Hurricane Helene Recovery

ST. PETERSBURG, FL (Oct. 3, 2024) - In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the City of St. Petersburg has taken steps to make the permitting process faster, more accessible, and more convenient for homeowners who need to file permits for repairs to their homes due to storm damage. The City is waiving the application and inspection fees for permits to perform demolition and repair of properties damaged by the hurricane. While permits are still required, affected residents can remediate storm damage to their property without permitting fees over the next six months.

Additionally, the City has set up Remote Permitting Sites across the city for increased access to the community.

Remote Permitting Sites Locations

  • Azalea Recreation Center: 1600 72nd St. N

  • Enoch D. Davis Center: 1111 18th Ave. S

  • Roberts Recreation Center: 1246 50th Ave. N

Remote Permitting Sites are open Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Schedules and locations are subject to change based on post-storm conditions. Check www.stpete.org/Helene for real-time updates on Remote Permitting Site activation, locations, and operating hours.

Homeowners can also visit the main permitting office at the City's Municipal Services Center at One 4th St. N. Operating hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Wednesday from 8 a.m.-12 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: Remote Permitting Sites will accept debit or credit cards only, cash and checks will not be accepted.

What to Bring to a Remote Permitting Site

  • Photo ID

  • Floor layout

  • Summary of storm damage

  • Photos and/or videos of storm damage - email [email protected] with your address and the storm name in the subject line

Tips for Homeowners

  • Get required permits before you or your contractor start repair, improvement, or construction on your home.

  • Build back safer and stronger - consider building stronger to withstand future storms.

  • Hire a licensed contractor.

  • Elevate your electrical outlets and HVAC system.

Why is Permitting Important?

Unpermitted, uninspected work to repair damage from Hurricane Helene may reduce the safety and value of affected properties and will jeopardize the 25% discount on flood insurance currently applied to all residents in St. Pete through FEMA's Community Rating System.
