I am proud to share that Pentair Flow has been recognized by Business Intelligence Group with its Sustainability Product of the Year award for our recently launched, energy-efficient, Pentair Xcentric Impeller pump. This award recognizes products that improve sustainability and are designed to be more eco-friendly than market alternatives. This innovative pump helps reduce clogging while operating to keep municipal wastewater systems running smoothly.

Population growth and aging infrastructure has put a strain on wastewater systems around the world. Clogged pumps can be a major issue for municipalities as they require the pump to be shut down and manually cleaned. With denser populations, more people are using municipal wastewater systems, and most of these systems were not originally designed for today's modern challenges. In addition, the introduction of fibrous materials, such as disposable wipes, has resulted in municipal pumps clogging more and more.

Innovating in Municipal Wastewater with Xcentric Impeller PUMP

Raymond Meijnen, Research and Development Manager at Pentair based in Winterswijk, the Netherlands, tells the story of the Xcentric Impeller, how it was developed, and its importance in solving municipal wastewater problems.

The Pentair Flow team set out to address this challenge by reimagining the standard wastewater pump's impeller design. The engineering team's innovative new impeller design eliminated the leading edges on the impeller blade, which helps to prevent flushable wipes and other materials from becoming trapped between the impeller and the wear plate. This allows debris to more easily pass through.

These efficiencies now help to mitigate municipal clogging and capacity drift, while reducing energy consumption, operating at over 85 percent energy efficiency to lower the lifecycle cost of the system.*

Furthermore, the Xcentric technology has been tested to be fish-friendly**, making it suitable for clean water applications and broadening its potential use across various environmental and industrial contexts.

Clogging resistance, capacity drift, reduced vibration, energy savings/efficiency, and total cost of ownership information are based on estimates using data gathered from the results of prior retrofit applications of Pentair's Xcentric impeller at several pumping stations, including Amsterdam, Carlsbad, Aalst, Pretorialaan, Damsterdiep, and Selwerd. The source of such data is Pentair field testing, as well as customer-gathered data and testimonials.
