Tracy Patterson Joins Visual and Performing Arts Leadership Team

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Professor of Music Tracy Patterson '23 was appointed as Winthrop University's College of Visual and Performing Arts' new associate dean and director of graduate studies, effective July 1.

As part of the college's leadership team, he will work with the dean, chairs, faculty, staff, and other academic leaders at Winthrop to support the teaching, research, and service mission of the college and institution.

Patterson said he is honored to serve alongside the college's accomplished and dedicated faculty and staff. "I look forward to working with a variety of stakeholders across our campus and community," he said. "While many of the job responsibilities attracted me to the position, the opportunity to enhance our graduate programs and work with student services to support the success of our undergraduate students greatly piqued my interest. I am ready to get to work!"

A saxophonist, Patterson has served as the woodwind area coordinator and program coordinator for the commercial music program at Winthrop. In 2021-22, he served as interim director and assessment coordinator for the Office of the First-Year Experience. He received a Master of Business Administration from Winthrop, a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from Texas Tech University, a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Central Oklahoma, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Northeastern State University.

As an artist musician, Patterson has performed alongside notable artists such as Natalie Cole, Linda Eder, The Temptations, Brett Eldridge and Darius Rucker. Additionally, Patterson has been a featured soloist at various jazz festivals and as a band member on music tours across the United States, Mexico and Europe. He has presented performances, masterclasses and lectures at numerous conferences, most recently, presenting, "Coaching Outside of Your Comfort Zone: Teaching Musical Styles Beyond Your Area of Expertise," at the 2024 International Saxophone Symposium. Patterson is a D'Addario and Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician and exclusively performs on D'Addario reeds and Yamaha saxophones.
