November 2024 events & updates at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park

HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi - Plan ahead and make the most of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park in November with these events and updates. Photos are available.

All events are free, but park entrance fees apply. Some programs are sponsored by the National Parks Arts Foundation, Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association. Programs are subject to change or cancellation without notice. Check the park calendar for more information.

Great Pacific Garbage Patch: From Hopeless to Hopeful. Dive into the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a flotilla of trash in the Pacific Ocean the size of Texas! Ranger Dean Gallagher will take you on a virtual cruise that traces the trash items back to their point of origin. Learn about the impacts of marine debris and what is being done to turn the tide and clean up our oceans to protect future generations. Part of Hawai'i Volcanoes' ongoing After Dark in the Park programs and co-sponsored by the Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Free, but park entrance fees apply.
When: Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m.

Delbert Anderson Quartet in Concert. The National Parks Arts Foundation November artist-in-residence is jazz trumpeter Delbert Anderson and quartet, keyboardist Robert Muller, bassist Mike McCluhan and drummer Khalil Brown. Anderson is a Dinè (Navajo) musician from New Mexico whose music is a blend of classical jazz, funk, hip-hop and traditional Dinè music. The quartet often plays sold-out venues, come early as this is expected to be a very popular event!
When: Saturday, November 9 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Where: Kahuku Unit Visitor Contact Station. The Kahuku entrance is located in Kaʻū near the 70.5 mile marker ma uka off Highway 11.

Volcano Art Center Hula Arts. The Volcano Art Center presents authentic hula kāhiko performances through its ongoing Hula Arts at Kīlauea program. Performances occur the second Saturday of each month through 2024 and are sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and/or Hawai'i Tourism Authority. Kapua Kaʻauʻa Unokeahi and Papahana Unuiti perform this month. Bring sun/rain gear and a sitting mat. Free, but park entrance fees apply. For more information visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
When: Saturday, November 9 at 10:30 a.m. Arrive early, parking is limited at the visitor center. Additional parking available at Kūkamāhuākea (Steam Vents).
Where: Kahua Hula (hula platform) near the Volcano Art Center Gallery and Kīlauea Visitor Center.

Big Island Singers in Concert. Big Island Singers presents their "Earth, Sea, Sky" concert. In its fifth season of celebrating the world around us through song, the Big Island Singers is a 36-person community chorus led by Doug Albertson. Part of Hawai'i Volcanoes' ongoing After Dark in the Park programs and co-sponsored by the Friends of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Free, but park entrance fees apply.
When: Friday, November 22 at 7 p.m.

Ranger-Guided Programs at Kīlauea Summit. Did you know that Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park offers free guided programs nearly every day? Experience Life on the Edge, Into the Volcano and other ranger treks by checking the park calendar for dates, times and descriptions.

Volunteer Opportunities
Stewardship at the Summit Rainforest Restoration. Volunteer to help remove invasive, non-native plant species that prevent native plants from growing in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and long pants. Bring a hat, rain gear, day pack, snacks and water. Gloves and tools are provided. Under 18? Parental or guardian accompaniment with written consent is required. Visit the park website for details.
When: November 2, 9, 15, 23 & 30. Meet at 8:45 a.m.

Construction Updates
Construction at Park Entrance Continues. Visitors should always plan ahead before coming to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, especially now. Temporary lane closures at the park entrance continue as the new administrative lane and roundabout are built. Cruise ships are in port almost every day and surges in visitation are common between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; visit outside those hours to avoid congestion at the entrance and popular areas. Kīlauea Visitor Center Renovation Update. Kīlauea Visitor Center (KVC), restrooms, and most adjacent parking will close for construction no sooner than January 2025. After Dark in the Park, Nā Leo Manu and other park programs will be suspended when KVC closes. During the closure, the interior of KVC will be rehabilitated, new exhibits will be installed, the restrooms will be relocated and rebuilt, and the lānai will be replaced by an expanded covered hālau (pavilion). Limited visitor services and the Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association store will relocate 1.2 miles west to a temporary visitor contact area, more on that soon! Volcano House and the Volcano Art Center Gallery will remain open and parking will be available. Hele-On bus will still use the KVC bus parking stalls as a bus stop.
When: KVC closure dates to be determined, no sooner than January 2025.
