SANTA FE - Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on Monday issued the following statement in honor of Veterans Day:
"Today, we honor the tremendous sacrifice and commitment of New Mexico's veterans who have proudly served both our state and nation. Numbering more than 140,000, New Mexico has one of the largest veteran populations in the nation, reflecting the unique and resilient spirit of our people.
Our state is dedicated to supporting our veterans in meaningful ways. Today, we proudly celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Taos County Veterans Cemetery, a place of honor and remembrance that will stand as a symbol of community dedication and years of hard work by veterans, local leaders, and New Mexicans. With nearly $7.5 million invested by the state in its construction, the cemetery reflects our ongoing commitment to those who serve our nation in the military.
In addition to honoring their legacy, my administration is supporting veterans financially. We have eliminated state taxes on Social Security income for most seniors-up to $100,000 for single filers and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly-and exempted the first $30,000 of military retirement benefits from taxation, making New Mexico an even more welcoming place for veterans and their families. We have also invested in state-of-the-art facilities at the New Mexico State Veterans' Home to provide enhanced care for those who have given so much for our freedom.
As we observe Veterans Day, let us take a moment to thank the veterans in our lives, those who served abroad and in our own communities. Their sacrifices remind us of the true cost of freedom and the enduring strength of the American spirit. The people of New Mexico are profoundly grateful for our veterans, their families, and the freedoms they protect. May we honor and support them, now and always."
