TSTC to host Nolan County Health Fair on Oct. 22

(SWEETWATER, Texas) - Texas State Technical College's Student Center in Sweetwater will be the site of the annual Nolan County Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The health fair will provide information and free health screenings to the public and is sponsored by Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, and TSTC.

"This is a great opportunity for the college to give back to the people of Nolan County," Joni Coons, senior coordinator for TSTC Residence Life and Engagement, said. "We have been a longtime sponsor of the event, which has grown over the years."

More than 50 agencies from throughout the region have registered for booths, Coons said.

Students from TSTC's Vocational Nursing and LVN to RN Transition Nursing programs will provide screenings for blood pressure, heart rate, and weight.

"Our nursing students always do a great job working with the public during the health fair," Coons said. "It also is a great opportunity for them to meet representatives from the different health agencies who provide services in the Big Country."

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital employees will check blood sugar and cholesterol levels at no charge. The Sweetwater Fire Department will perform free electrocardiograms.

The Sweetwater Lions Club will be accepting used eyeglasses for the Texas Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center, which is located in Midland.

Coons said information about cancer education, dental availability in the area, Medicaid, Medicare, veteran services, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will also be available.

Applications for TSTC's spring semester are being accepted. Spring registration begins Oct. 28. To learn more, visit tstc.edu.
