From Unexpected Beginnings to Educational Excellence: Juilenne Townsend-Sanders' Inspiring Journey

In the world of education, some of the most passionate teachers find their calling through unexpected paths. Juilenne Townsend-Sanders' story is a testament to the power of perseverance, lifelong learning, and the profound impact of discovering one's true purpose.

An Unconventional Start

Despite growing up with government worker parents and no teachers in her family, Townsend-Sanders found herself drawn to education. Her journey began with a false start in college as a physical therapy major, leading to a pivotal decision to leave the program in her sophomore year to have a child.

The Turning Point

In 1992, a job at Prince George's County Public Schools as a before- and after-care teacher changed everything. Townsend-Sanders recalls the moment of clarity: "I knew that was it. I knew that's where I was supposed to be. And so I ended up finishing school in PG County Public Schools, and I became a paraprofessional."

Balancing motherhood and education, she graduated from Sojourner-Douglass College in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, benefiting from the college's free evening childcare.

A Life-Changing Discovery

Townsend-Sanders' life took another unexpected turn when she learned of her adoption at her uncle's funeral. This revelation led her on a journey to find her birth mother, uncovering a surprising connection to her chosen profession.
"Talking about this makes me heal," Townsend-Sanders shares. Her birth mother, a Dominican Republic native, had been a school teacher for over thirty years. This discovery not only expanded her family but also deepened her connection to education.

Embracing Continuous Growth

Now, with 32 years of teaching experience, Townsend-Sanders continues to pursue excellence through the Residency in Education Teaching Program at American University. "I always wanted to earn a master's in early childhood," she explains. "I always wanted to become a certified educator and am so appreciative that AU will support me through the process of passing my Praxis exam and becoming certified."

A Philosophy of Inclusive Learning

Townsend-Sanders' approach to education is both inclusive and insightful. She believes, "All children can learn. They have multiple languages: some learn through tactile methods, some through visuals, and others might learn through play. They all have different languages-that's their way of thinking. Any child can learn, period." She doesn't believe that children arrive to learn as empty vessels, either, "They don't come waiting for me to fill it. It's already filled. So I come to learn from them."

Passion for the Classroom

Unlike some seeking administrative roles, Townsend-Sanders' heart remains in the classroom. "I'm still in the honeymoon phase of this job!" she exclaims. "I want to retire from the classroom." Her pursuit of a master's degree is driven by her desire to be a better teacher and achieve the certification she's always wanted.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Educators

For those considering or new to teaching, Townsend-Sanders offers valuable advice: "Always remember your 'why' and always be flexible. Always remember why you're doing what you're doing, especially in the beginning, when things could be rough and you're trying to figure this out and that out. Always remember your 'why,' and always be flexible and ready for change."
She emphasizes the importance of adaptability with a practical example: "You may have your day planned out already and you know in your mind what your day is gonna look like. You can be in the middle of a lesson and the fire alarm will go off. Make sure that you have your attendance list by the door, so that you can it as you head out the door … so always be ready for change."
