The Department of Health and Welfare (DHW) and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) has joined forces with Regence BlueShield of Idaho and Idaho Business for the Outdoors (IBO) to create an outdoor program for foster families across the state: the Idaho State Park Foster Family Passport. The program will give foster families annual park passes for free entry into all 30 Idaho state parks. In addition, the program will host First Time Adventure events across the state teaching practical outdoor skills like how to set up a tent and how to properly put out a fire.

"Over a thousand foster families throughout the state of Idaho will have the opportunity to recreate and enjoy Idaho's beautiful outdoors together thanks to this partnership and generosity. This is what I hope will be one of many examples of employers and organizations working together for Idaho's children and foster parents. We are proud to stand united in support of foster parents with IDPR, Regence, and IBO, and take action to strengthen and enrich the lives of Idaho's children," said DHW Director Alex Adams.

The agencies would like to invite the press to a media event, August 7, 2024, at 11:30 AM, at the Discovery Park Unit of Lucky Peak State Park. Both Director Adams and Director Buxton will be present as well as representatives from Regence and IBO. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the program and the agencies' long-term goals.

Spending time in nature and connecting with the outdoors has a profoundly positive impact on overall health and wellbeing. The Idaho Foster Family Park Pass nurtures Idaho's future by developing a sense of confidence and connectedness to the greater community and natural landscape.

"The benefits of being outdoors and in Idaho State Parks are many and often life-changing," said Susan Buxton, IDPR Director. "We appreciate the ability to partner with Health and Welfare, Regence and IBO to bring these opportunities to 1,200 Idaho foster families."

The group is currently looking for additional partners and sponsors to join the program and ensure its longevity well into the future. If you are interested in contributing, please reach out to IDPR's Chelsea Chambers at 208-514-2430 or [email protected].
