Get Ready for Fall Gardening!

September 24, 2024

As the season is changing so are our gardens! It is that time of the year where we harvest fruits and vegetables, collect seeds, and plant our winter veggies. The Hayward Public Library has a unique community seed exchange program where you can check out seeds and can return seeds that you have saved to share with others. Membership to the Seed Lending Library is free and provides resources for beginners to get started!

If you don't have a garden at home, don't worry, you can join a community garden! Hazel Community Garden managed by Forestr.org has seven garden boxes free for public use, and Hayward Community Garden, run by H.A.R.D. (Hayward Area Recreation District), has plots available for rent and hosts gardening classes through the Master Gardener's Program.

If you have any extra fruits or veggies that you don't mind sharing with the community, Forestr.org collects leftover produce to donate to food banks and directly to individuals facing hunger. You can learn more and volunteer or share your produce at Forestr.org

On top of all these wonderful community resources, don't forget the City of Hayward is hosting a fall Compost Giveaway on Saturday October 19th starting at 7:30am at 1401 Golf Course Rd. If you want free compost, great for garden soil and making your veggies and plants grow healthier, swing by early before we run out!

To learn more or brush up on your gardening knowledge, the Seed Lending Library Program will host a Master Gardener Lecture, Planting California Natives, on October 12th at the Hayward Public Library.

Happy Gardening!
