OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann visits Buenos Aires: meeting with Foreign Minister Mondino and rest of National Cabinet

Foreign Minister Diana Mondino welcomed today the Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, at the San Martín Palace, whose visit to Argentina was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship. The Foreign Minister will also participate in other meetings that Cormann will hold with authorities of the Argentine Government.

Mondino headed the meeting of the "Inter-Ministerial Coordination Commission" for accession to the OECD, with Secretary General Cormann and his team of collaborators. The following Ministers of the national Cabinet also participated: Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers, Guillermo Franco; Ministers of State Deregulation and Transformation, Federico Sturzenegger; Defense, Luis Petri; Health, Mario Russo; Security, Patricia Bullrich; Justice, Mariano Cúneo Libarona; Secretary of Finance, Pablo Quirno, and the Legal and Technical Secretary of the Presidency of the Nation, Javier Herrera Bravo.

At the working meeting, ideas were exchanged and Argentina's commitment to politically promote the necessary actions and carry out the work required in the accession process was made explicit.

As part of this work, Argentina is currently preparing the "Initial Memorandum", in which a self-assessment will be carried out specifying the degree of alignment of its legislation, policies and practices with each of the substantive legal instruments of the OECD.

The Commission, chaired by Mondino, was established by Decree 591/2024 and is also made up of the Chief of the Cabinet of Ministers, the Ministers of Economy, Justice, Human Capital, Health and Deregulation and Transformation of the State, as well as the Legal and Technical Secretariat of the Presidency of the Nation.

Tomorrow, Friday, August 30, Diana Mondino will chair a working lunch with the OECD Secretary General together with a group of Governors, with the aim of provide information about the accession process to the OECD at federal level.

In this regard, it is worth mentioning that within the context of the Federal Council on Foreign Relations and International Trade, a "OECD Special Commission" is being established in order to keep the Provinces informed about the progress in the accession process.

Secretary General Cormann's visit is the first formal activity of launching the process of interaction between the OECD and our country on the path to accession to the Organization.

Argentina made the required steps to obtain full membership in the OECD following the note of acceptance sent by the President Javier Milei on December 11, 2023, in response to the invitation issued by the Organization. Subsequently, Secretary General Cormann handed over the Roadmap for the accession of the Argentine Republic to Foreign Minister Mondino on May 2 at the meeting of the Council of Ministers of the organization in Paris.
