Kildee Statement on the Supreme Court’s Ruling in Trump v. United States

FLINT-Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) issued the following statement on the Supreme Court's ruling in Trump v. United States:

"This ruling will go down in history as one of the Supreme Court's worst decisions.

"One of our nation's founding principles is the rule of law, and that no person is above the law. Today's Supreme Court decision threatens that principle by placing the presidency above the law. The President of the United States is not a King. Yet 248 years after our nation's independence, this Supreme Court has dangerously concluded that any past, future, or current president can be insulated from prosecution for crimes they commit while in office.

"When it comes to the former president, this ruling does not change the facts. Former President Trump incited an insurrection against the United States government. Former President Trump, after losing an election, tried to stop the counting of electoral votes to illegally hold onto power. Former President Trump, already a convicted felon, faces multiple felony charges in other criminal trials, including for his role in the January 6th insurrection. Donald Trump should be held accountable for his crimes.

"This momentous decision was split along predictable ideological lines, including three Supreme Court justices granting the same president who appointed them immunity from prosecution. With this ruling and others, this partisan and extreme Supreme Court continues to erode the American people's trust in institutions and government. Congress must act immediately to restore that trust."
